What types of insulation are ok to use in indoor furnace enclosure area?
We have a furnace installed in our home. It is located in the hallway with a door for access to the furnace area. It's a small closet area that has the furnace along with our chimney/bricks. There is a space above the furnace that leads into the attic which is open and you can actually climb in the attic from that closet area if you wanted to. The chimney is just behind the furnace. On one side of the furnace is a bedroom and the other side is the living room. The bedroom and living room have 1/2 inch sheetrock and 2x4 studs which have about 1/2 foot of clearance on either side of the furnace betwen the furnace and the studs. Our question is can we use regular bat insulation in that area or do we have to use the "duct board" that has that aluminum sheet over the styrofoam?
you could use either,though i think bat insulation with sheetrock would be wisest.both are flame retardant,but you will get a higher r-value with the bat insulation and the sheet rock will add another layer of fire protection.good luck
